What type of soil do ferns like?

I see ferns growing out of an old brick wall, I think there is something in the mortar that the ferns like. The roots are deeply enbedded between the bricks. I would like to to replant in a flower pot. I tred to get as much roots as I can without destroying the plant. I have two species of ferns growing out there.
They are very pretty.

Answer

Dear Gardener:  Ferns like shade, moisture, good drainage and soil rich in organic matter.  Some ferns like more acid soil, others prefer more basic soil.  I don't know what kind of fern you will be growing.  Since the ferns are growing in a wall with mortar, they may possibly prefer a basic soil.  If the ferns dont flourish, try adding a touch of lime (available at garden centers) to the soil, but I suspect that won't be necessary.
