Is there a way to eradicate all the roots and suckers that invade our garden from a neighbor’s two honey locust trees?

They are about 5 and 7 feet away from our fence. We just recently found out as we did some planting in our flowerbeds. There are roots everywhere and we try the best we can to remove the roots. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Answer

Tree roots in flower or vegetable gardens are difficult, if not impossible, to eliminate. While most roots from trees are in the top 8 inches of soil, trees will send out roots in search of water and they can go fairly deep. Ask any plumber how deep roots are found around or in sewer pipes. Six feet deep is not unusual. Therefore, barriers are not practical. A two foot deep concrete barrier will work for awhile, but eventually, roots will appear outside of the barrier. The soil in the beds is rich in nutrients and kept moist. This is what trees need and send out roots in search of water and nuytrients.

It is best to place beds some distance from the tree canopies.
