My tree was hit by lightning and a few feet of bark came off. Must it be treated?

Lightening damage to a tree where bark is stripped off may not be fatal to the tree. However, there may be other damage that will cause the tree to become hazardous and/or die. If the bark is stripped off on one side, the tree will probably survive if no other damage is done. Check the tree to assess that no other damage was done that will make it a hazard. Often the trunk or major branches will be damaged. The imbeded bark between branches will suffer crackes. If damage is visible it is best to contact a certified arborist to check it out if it is located where it can cause damage to property or people.
