We have a narrow space by power lines but need shade trees.
Our property is on a busy road facing south-west. By sacrificing 6 feet of our driveway, we could make an area for trees. What would grow fast, tolerate sun, and stay narrow enough for the power lines nearby?
Answer
A narrow tree that will not interfere with power lines and be a fast grower would be a cultivar with the name columnar. One such tree would be Arborvitae Green Giant or Emarald Green. However, they do not form a canope and would not provide much shade.
Planting trees in a six foot wide strip next to a driveway does not leave much room for trees with canopes. Small crabapple, redbud, dogwood and birch trees might fit into the space, but eventually grow over the driveway.
