How do I care for an orchid received as a gift?
Answer
The orchid that is most commonly sold is phalaenopsis which blooms for a long period, so if you would like to keep it until it loses its' blossoms it doesn't need much. It needs light but not total sun. Indirect light is best as on a windowsill. You can provide humidity if the pot is on a tray with pebbles and water in it however the pot should be above the water. The plant should not have to be watered more than once a week. When you water hold the plant and pot under the faucet in the kitchen sink until it runs through and out the bottom of the pot. Let the water drain as much as possible and replace it on the windowsill. If you would like to know what kind of orchid you have, there are many photos of orchids on the internet if you have access to a computer.
