I've been searching for a definitive answer to the question of when is the earliest time one can plant polianthes tuberosa bulbs in our area (Philadelphia). Do you happen to have any idea when that might be or could you to give me an idea? I know they need to be planted after the last frost and the rule of thumb is generally "after Mother's Day" but that seems pretty late. I'm hoping to safely put in the ground earlier if possible.

Answer

Pollianthus tuberousus grows in zones 7 - 10 and requires good drainage to survive our winters. You might get away with planting the tuber in mid april, but a heavy frost might damage it. That is why after Mothers Day is recommended. Of course, you could start it in a pot and keep it indoors under bright light until it is warm outside, like June 1.
