Can you suggest some field guides for U.S. eastern wildflowers?

Answer

Hre are some books from our collection in the PHS McLean Library. PHS members can borrow. These are all field guides, but Audubon Society is the best size for carrying in the field

Thieret, John W.   National Audubon Society field guide to North American wildflowers :   eastern region /   New York : Alfred A. Knopf : Distributed by Random House, c2001.

Smaller in size than Clemants (below) – about 7” high --- so it’s more likely that it’ll get used. You have to flip back and forth between photos and description, but the photos are good.

Clemants, Steven Earl.   Wildflowers in the field and forest :   a field guide to the northeastern United States /   New York : Oxford University Press, 2006.

For very local, Maine coast:

The plants of Acadia National Park /   Orono, Me. : University of Maine Press, c2010.

Like Clemants it’s almost too large to consult in the field, but it’s a really lovely book, and it covers more than just the plants in Acadia National Park.

If you are in the southeast :

Cotterman, Laura Mansberg. Wildflowers of the Atlantic Southeast Timber Press Field Guide, 2019.
