What are the best varieties of pansies / violas to plant in Philadelphia for winter through to spring color?
Answer
Dennis, any of the pansies that are sold in the fall should survive through the winter. But the snow, ice, and variable temperatures make them look pretty bad until the spring. Even then sometimes they are really set back in development and don't look that great in the spring. I prefer to plant a fall plant such as flowering kale/cabbage that usually lasts into January, then in the spring plant the pansies for sale. More work but more color! Thanks for contacting PHS. ep
