What tree has the best red color all season - not just the fall.

I'm looking for a tree to bring red leaves into the garden

Answer

The only time you will get the red leaf color that you see in the Fall is in the Fall due to cooler weather and shorter day length however there are several trees that have leaf colors ranging from purple to shades of dark crimson during the summer months. Acer palmatum atropurpureum `Boodgood' a (Japanese maple) grows slowly to 10-12', acer palmatum dissectum 'Red Dragon' (Japanese maple) that grows slowly to 15-20'. Some plum trees have reddish purple leaves such as prunus cerasifera `Atropurpurea' and prunus cerasifera `Thundercloud' which grow to approximately 20' high and wide.
