What are some good vines to grow directly on brick walls/buildings without a trellis that will not damage the wall?

Can you elaborate on varieties, and considerations such as maintenance over time, long term effects of vines on brick walls. I am an urban ecologuist looking to bring more creative landscaping in to Philadelphia.

Answer

It is best to avoid growing vines with tendrils on brick walls because the tendrils will get into the mortar.  Parthenosisus which was previously mentioned is very agressive and a difficult vine to keep in control.  It might best to grow a vine that could have additional support, such as a climbing rose or clematis. Clematis montana rubens blooms in ealry spring.  Another Clematis 'Polish Spirit' blooms over a long period.
