I live in South Jersey. I noticed my grass in the back yard has orange color powder on grass blades.

In the early morning the powder comes off on my feet. What is this on the grass? could it be a disease? We fertilize and water as scheduled. what can we do to get rid of it?

Answer

Rust fungus on grass will be yellow, orange or red and rubs off on your shoes when the grass is wet. Proper grass maintenance will cure the problem. Fungicides usually don't help.

Apply a nitogen fertilizer in spring and twice during the summer. Do not cut the grass shorter than three inches. Water infrequently and only during dry periods.
