What is the best low maintenance ground cover to plant under a tree in our City Harvest community garden?
It has been an area that becomes overgrown and we will like to find something to plant that can take care of itself for the most part and looks good.
Answer
Landscaping fabric is one solution that creates a barrier and does not take energy from desireable plants. Other solutions will require removal of perennial plants and seeds and will compete for nutrients. Also, ground cover plants need to be planted from cuttings or seeds. You will want perennials only.
Mrytle, spurge, sweet woodruff, horizontal juniper, mint, pachysandra, Salix retusa, sedum, wooly thyme, vinca minor are some that you can try. Also, you can mix some of them.
