Need help propagating holly

I have ilex from longwood gardens, may be longwood gold I got 2 cuttings to root but need info on next steps . Repotting, heat mat, misting. I would also like the best methods of successful cutting growith so I can have a few more of these. The two survivors are the only ones of 10 I tried. Thank you

Answer

Propagating woody plants like Ilex, holly, is generally done in late summer or fall. Take tip cuttings about three inches long. Remove blossoms and the lowest side shoots. Cut below where the stem branches at an angle. Treat it with a rotting hormone and  place in a well draining soil. Soil with lots of perlite work best. Water well and keep covered with a clear cover until roots form.

When the cutting roots and begins to grow, pot up in a well drained soil, protect the plant for a few weeks and then bring out into the open. Protect from bright light for a few weeks. Misting and putting on a  heat mat is not required. Keep indoors for the first winter.
