After cutting back a Mahonia bealei which had severe winter defoliation it seems to be coming back.

I have noticed that the leaves are getting a black brown spot on them and then eventually dying. What is wrong and what can I do.

Answer

Unfortunately the combination of high humidity and frequent rainfall have created ideal conditions for fungal diseases. The agicultural extension service at NC State University should be able to give you more specific information on preventative measures for your location.
