Which side of a calla lily bulb, smooth side or bumpy side, should be up when planted?
And can calla lily bulbs be planted in pots that are then sunk in the garden, for easy retrieval before cold weather?
Answer
Dear Gardener,
Calla lily rhizomes should be planted vertically with the bumps up. Those bumps are growing points. Plant about 3 to 4 inches deep.
Calla lillies are easily grown in containers, so sinking the pots seems reasonable, although I have not been able to find anything that specifically addresses this method. I'd say it's worth a try. It surely would make lifting them much easier.
