Cardinal Flowers - the plants have been in the ground for 3 years and this season they did not flower.

All the leaves / stems turned brown in the early summer and their condition continues to weaken. Any suggestions?
Soil in the flower bed does not drain well and contains some clay. The bed also contains Iris which show no signs of distress.

Answer

dear Gardener:  I suspect that your Cardinal flower plants were suffering from too much rain.  It sounds like the plants are weakened by a fungus due to all our rain--which seems to be continuing.  Hopefully the root systems of the plants are fine and next summer will be more normal with rainfall.
