someone gave me a lot of wildflower seeds. When and how would be the best way to plant them? Thank you.

Answer

Lucky you!!!   If they are seeds local to our growing area ( not for Alaska or the desert for instance), there are several ways to use the seeds:  simply broadcast the seeds now in the area where you would like wildflowers, could bed a flower bed atyour home or a nearby field.  Or, you could scratch the surface of a to be flower bed at your home.  This would would ensure better germination.  A third way to grow the seeds would be to put some potting soil in a large container and scratch the seeds in the soil surface.  Leave outside for the cold and rain which is necessary for many wildflower seeds to germinate. Then when the plants arebig enough next spring, plant the plants where you want them.  A little trick for the container is a gallon jug:  make a cut below the handle almost all the way around, leaving uncut a 1" area at the base of the handle.  Open the jug and fill bottom of jug with soil and scratch in the seeds. Dampen well.  Close the jug and tape the cut seem.  Do not put the cap on the jug.  Place outdoors where critters cannot knock it over or carry it away.  Check in spring for germination and remove plants when big enough.  Don't give jug too much sun or the plants will cook. If the plants get tall before you want to plant them remove the tape and open the jug. For more details on winter sowing, Google "winter sowing, milk jug".
