Do the street trees roots affect the water lines?
Trying to generate more interest in planting trees on my block but many neighbors are concerned about the roots becoming a problem with the pipes.
Answer
Thank you for arousing interest in planting trees. In general, trees that don't have fibrous roots (like willows, etc.) don't affect the water lines unless they are broken in the first place. In the spring, see what kind of trees you like that are fairly newly planted in your area. These probably have been recommended as being successful. Just be sure they aren't the types that get real tall to affect the power and other lines above them. They also should not be the kind that have a wide spread or are evergreen. If you need help identifying them or with planting techniques please feel free to contact us in the spring. ep
