I am looking for advice and any help regarding the right tree(s)

to add to my property line since my 2 neighbors (fellow duplex owners) went ahead and cut down two perfectly hearty and healthy Holly trees that were home to a few dozen birds and a woodpecker that have lived in our courtyard for at least the 18 years I have been here. I along with another owner, we would like to restore the oxygen, life, curb appeal and property value we had up until yesterday morning after they sawed down the two trees with their machinery and equipment trespassing our property lines to get to theirs without warning to any other owners in the common courtyard. We would appreciate any help you could give us.Sincerely,Francesca DiRenzo-Kauffman

Answer

So very sorry to hear about your trees.  In general, if the trees were happy and healthy, it is a good idea to replant with the same type of tree as it likes the soil there.  In Philadelphia soil is extremely variable.  So hollies are good options, although they don't grow very fast.  Also what did they do about the tree stump?  If they ground it up and just left the chips they are not good to plant in as they aren't composted, take  nitrogen from the soil when decomposing, reduce in volume over time thus affecting the planting level, change soil pH, etc.  So remove them, replace with a mix of top soil, surrounding soil and miracle-gro garden soil.  When you dig your new hole "score" the sides deeply so the roots easily can get out of the hole you created.  Leather-leaf viburnum also gets tall but isn't as desired by the birds.  If you need more planting info please contact us again. Or plant an upright type of pine tree, or one of each, holly and pine.  Best of luck and thank you for your caring. ep
