Can you identify this weed for me?

Can you possibly tell me the name of the weed in photo?  Thank you

Answer

Dear Gardener,

Your weed is Lesser trefoil (Trifolium dubium,), It is an annual lawn weed that spreads by creeping runners and seeds when the soil is weak and compacted. It is also the plant associated with the Irish shamrock. Aerating the soil and raking to raise the plant to mower height and then mowing will weaken the plant and remove the flowers. Best not to allow the seeds to form, as they can remain viable for years.
