Question about our evergreen

In our backyard there is an evergreen tree with what appears to be another species growing from the main trunk. Have you ever seen something like this and do you have an explanation for the phenomena?

Answer

Dear Gardener,

Your evergreen, which appears to be a dwarf Alberta spruce, is undergoing what is known as "reversion". Many plants are discovered by keen eyed plantsmen who see an aberration in nature, in this case, the ordinary White Spruce. What is happening is your plant is trying to go back to its origin. When this happens, you want to cut out the reverted branches before the unwanted plant takes over.  Nipping this in the bud will hopefully prevent this from happening.
