What is the history of the PHS Mural?

Located at 13th & Arch Streets, Philadelphia

Answer

In 1998 PHS worked with Mural Arts to have a PHS mural created at 13th & Arch, near the Pennsylvania Convention Center, venue for the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Artist David McShane executed life-like plant portraits, including a sunflower and tomato for maximum visual impact. See the attached article from PHS News 1998.

In 2018, McShane and mural artist Eurhi Jones collaborated to create a new mural to replace and re-imagine the 1998 work. Called "Water Gives Life" this mural was sponsored both by PHS and by the Philadelphia Water Department. "Water Gives Life" shows the preciousness of water and the flora and fauna it sustains.
