What is this wildflower I saw in bloom in February?

What kind of wildflowers seen on our walk yesterday might these be? I live in Berks County.

Answer

I checked with our super knowledgeable gardeners who happened to be in the library here at PHS when I was working on your question. Our gardeners say these look like the Winter Aconite,  (Eranthis sp.) and are in bloom in February in our area.

You'll see a good photo of these lovely flowers on the

Morris Arboretum website showing flowers in bloom now

Here is a nIce blog post by Margaret Roach in her excellent  blog "A Way To Garden."

hot p(l)ants: winter aconite, eranthis hyemalis

Lucky you for spotting them on your walk. Enjoy!
