What tree (or shrub) smells like cotton candy or burnt sugar?

One was growing in Washington Square. I would like to plant one. I also think it was mentioned in Grow magazine several issues ago.

Answer

I believe you are referring to the katsura tree, mentioned in the 2019 Fall issue of Grow magazine (p. 29), a “non-native katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), whose changing leaves in autumn give off a cotton candy fragrance that is appealing.” (great memory!).

To learn more about katsura, Google the Latin name, or check out this

Hope this helps!
